Mentor Guidelines

Mentor Guidelines

PROVERBS 27:17 As Iron Sharpens Iron, so one man sharpens another.
By no means are these guidelines something set in stone, consider them a basic
framework by which you operate within your mentoring relationship. We have discovered
that to best understand something we must answer the five “W questions; who, what,
where, when and why.

1. WHO AM I MENTORING?
You are mentoring men between the ages of 18 and 60 who struggle with alcoholism and
/or drug addiction. More than likely they have ruined every relationship and have burned
every bridge in support of their addiction.

2. WHAT AM I DOING?
Building relationships with men who desperately need a friend and someone they can
count on.

3. WHERE?
Where you decide to meet with the men is entirely up to you. Sometimes it is good to
meet on mission property and sometimes it is best to get away to a safe place, like a
coffee shop for example. If you choose to leave mission property it is imperative that the
mentor and mentee sign out and use “Meeting with Mentor” as the destination.

4. WHEN?
You can meet whenever you want as long as it doesn’t conflict with their work schedule
or mandatory mission activities.

5. WHY?
At MorningStar Mission we believe the mentoring relationship is crucial to each man’s
recovery. We have been created for relationships! That being said, it only makes sense
that this relationship be mandatory for each man in the program. Every man needs to
know they are loved and that they have someone who cares enough to invest time with
them.
